![]() The Blurb says: Welcome to America at the turn of the twentieth century, where the rhythms of ragtime set the beat. 42,280 ratings on Goodreads, with a 3.89 average rating. I’m intrigued to see which one you pick… FictionĪdded 29th September 2021. An unusual batch this month – not sure which one I’d choose myself! I had no idea Rider Haggard had written SF, so I’m intrigued by When the World Shook. Conan Doyle’s The Lost World will be a re-read and is also on my Classics Club list. The last two were both included in Mike Ashley’s history of early British SF, Yesterday’s Tomorrows, and since I owned them already in Kindle collected works, I shoved them onto the TBR. I picked up Graham Greene’s Our Man in Havana when it was on a Kindle deal. Ragtime by EL Doctorow is a leftover from my long-ago Great American Novel Quest. I like to run three months ahead with these polls, so the winner will be an August read. ![]() OK, People, time for another batch of four, still all from 2021. If I begin to fall behind, I’ll have a gap till I catch up again. ![]() Once a month, I shall list the four oldest books on the TBR, then the next four, and so on, and each time you will select the one you think I should read, either because you’ve read and enjoyed it, or because you think the blurb looks good. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Burnout book emily nagoski![]() What works really well here is how the information is presented (and how it’s read if you choose to pick up the audio book which is read by the authors). (In this vein, the book has a very specific view on the way the patriarchy impacts stress.) The book is also very gendered with a focus on what burnout and stress look like for women (cis and otherwise) although I would argue that the information on dealing with stress applies to anyone who reads it. If you make a habit of reading up on self-care and anxiety, some of the information the Nagoskis share will be familiar. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, especially among women.Įmily Nagoski and her identical twin sister Amelia Nagoski tackle these questions in their book Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle (2019). ![]() Burnout has become increasingly common in modern society–especially in the United States. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A thoroughly engaging homage to French culture and literature interlaced with the author's delicious personal anecdotes, How the French Invented Love is ideal for fans of Alain de Botton, Adam Gopnik, and Simon Schama. ![]() Spanning the Middle Ages to the present, Yalom explores a love-obsessed culture through its great works of literature-from Moliere's comic love to the tragic love of Racine, from the existential love of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre to the romanticism of George Sand and Alfred de Musset. Casa Grande e Senzala was written while lawyer and politician Getúlio Vargas sought to consolidate his presidency. His most famous book, published as Casa Grande e Senzala (Big House and Slave Quarters) in Portuguese in 1933 and translated into English as The Masters and the Slaves in 1946, was the first in a trilogy also comprising The Mansions and the Shanties ( 1963) and Order and Progress ( 1970). However, he didn’t limit himself to discussions of culture and cultural mixing, making bold claims about the political and social significance of this mixing as well as its implications for Brazilian national identity. Having been influenced by the cultural anthropology of Franz Boas while studying as a postgraduate at Columbia University, Freyre sought to chart the melding and borrowing that had taken place in Brazil along cultural lines.
